How to Choose the Best Size Front Range Harness for your Dog

Simply, measure around your dog's chest at the widest point (i.e., the girth).

Graphic showing how to measure around your dog's chest

Dog in-between sizes? Choose the larger size.

Size Dog's Chest/Girth Measure
XXS 33 - 43cm (13-17")
XS 43 - 56cm (17-22")
S 56 - 69cm (22-27")
M 69 - 81cm (27-32")
L/XL 81 - 107cm (32-42")

Have a young dog/puppy that is still growing?  To help work out what size might be best for your growing pup:

  1. Hold the tape measure around your dog's chest at the max measure for the size they fit currently.  E.g., if your pup currently sits in a size Small (56-69cm), then hold the tape measure around their chest at 69cm.
  2. This will show you how much 'growth room' that size harness has, but also will show you how much the next size up will tighten to.

Please contact us on info@caninespirit.com.au if you have any sizing queries.

Why dogs & their people love the Front Range Harness:

  • 2 leash attachment points (back clip & front clip) - a strong aluminum V-ring centered on the back for everyday walks.  Plus a reinforced webbing chest clip that can be used alongside training techniques by redirecting dogs that pull.
  • Easy to put on/take off - just slip over your dog's head, then clip the 2 side buckles
  • 4-point adjustment fit - securely fits most shapes & sizes.
  • Reflective trim - visibility in low light conditions. Also a light loop to attach The Beacon light to boost visibility.
  • Light foam padding - comfortable for all-day wear, minimises the chance of rubbing.
  • ID Pocket - to store dog tags

Training your dog not to pull?  Here's how the Front Range Harness can help!

The Front Range Harness has a reinforced webbing lead attachment point on the chest that can be used alongside proper training techniques, such as voice and reward training techniques, to help deter pulling. The idea behind this is that if a dog pulls too hard when the lead is attached to the chest, it will direct them towards you (like reins on a horse).  Hence, your dog may learn that pulling does not get them where they want to be. So Happy!

I have 2 Jack Russell's with very different body shapes which makes finding a harness that fits both quite challenging! The Ruffwear Front Range Harness fit them both perfectly! No rubbing or redness at all like other harnesses I have tried. They just look so much more comfortable in these harnesses. Thank you!

I purchased a blue harness in size extra small and Boris weighs approx 8kgs and the orange/green harness is a size small and Alife weighs approx 10kgs.

My rescue dog Ted is walking in a more controlled manner

My dog Ted is a 6kg rescue poodle cross so has a very small neck compared to his chest. I ordered the XS based on his chest measurement which is fine. He is adjusting to us using the front lead and walking in a more easily controlled manner which is great. The only challenge is that even on the smallest possible neck fixture, the harness spins making it tricky to control him when he spots other dogs.

Absolutely love this durable, comfy harness.

This is an awesome harness which fits my Cobberdog puppy perfectly..the front attachment helps with lead walking while I train her to walk by my side....Ive used these harnesses on my dogs over the last 15 years and can vouch that they last for years. They are perfect for beach dogs as handle the saltwater without perishing.

Second time purchasing ~ quality reducing

So I was forced to purchase another of these fab harnesses as the little lady was trying to put it on herself to take herself for a walk. When the replacement harness arrived we notice that the quality of the product seems to have diminished since 2022. Buckles that once were metal are now plastic.

Perfection

Best harness for my beautiful boy. Second Ruffwear harness that i have purchased as Comet has just outgrown his first harness. Being an Italian greyhound i need the harness to fit comfortably and be escape proof. Total perfection.

Great Harness

This is a great quality harness and I'm really happy with the design and materials. Also easy to put on and take off.
Not sure I got the sizing quite right - did go for the larger size and it's definitely correct for my dogs chest, but seems too big around her neck and thus a bit loose on the chest plate.

Repeat purchase, super happy

We just bought a new harness for our Labrador (size M) from the 2024 range, having previously been so impressed with the same harness from a few years ago that has has daily wear, a lot of machine washes and had only just started to show some minor signs of wear after about 3 years. The metal clip still looks brand new as well.
We chose the red colour for the new harness which we think looks stunning on our black Lab. We will also keep using our old one as a spare.

Its perfect!

I love everything about this harness. My dog is pretty happy to wear it and it's lightweight and makes it so much easer to walk him. He's a kelpie x and tends to be a hurry to get anywhere! It has just made such a difference to our outings. It's perfect!

Gyda is a part-bred Scottish Deer Hound and loves her Ruffwear harness. Very functional, easy to fit and remove, doesn't chaff the dog and easily cleaned. After three years and many km's our first harness has started to show some signs of wear. We now have a new harness on standby. Great products.

Quality product

Our Dalmatian Sunny fits perfectly into his smart new harness. It’s comfortable and offers full freedom of movement around his muscly shoulders. The padded chest plate helps keep him secure in the car. It’s easy to clean after jumping in muddy puddles!

Fantastic

My dog is needing to wear his harness every day and every night for medical treatment at the moment he is an ex racer so through all this heat and high humidity he is coping well with the harness when he is better I will possibly buy a new one for him I am that happy with it

Great sturdy harness

We bought this harness for our new Golden Retriever. Love the front and back attachments, a place to hang her ID and she is comfortable in it. Great colour options.

Great harness for helping to reduce pulling.

We adopted a 5 month old Golden Retriever who had experience zero socialisation/training. Her lead pulling has made walks not enjoyable at all. The harness fits well (I did measure her and bought medium) and looks great as well as significant improving her pulling. It’s still a work in progress but this bit of kit helps significantly.

Lovely colour

Our girl Harley is a Mastive cross and although still growing she looks wonderful in her new harness. She wears Large size and find this brand so good and easy to use

Great harness !! Recommend sizing up tho

Great looking harness very sturdy, xx small is for for toy poodle and small for my standard poodle, recommend sizing up as harness will cut into the armpits if the fabric doesn’t reach far enough down the chest (no matter how you adjust the straps), i found this out as the blue harness was originally purchased for the big dog based off the sizing guide.

Excellent Harness (Front Range Harness) for our Golden Retriever

We love this harness. It was recemmended by many other Golden Retriever owners for its quality, the front clip, and the fit (the Y across the chest much better than a straight across the shoulders harness) and we have been thrilled with it ever since it arrived. Our 7 month old (28kg) Golden Puppy has been doing pretty well at not pulling on a normal collar/leash, but was still not quite there. Using this harness with the front clip has helped massively in reducing any stress on the neck, and has helped us refine her walking. We chose the Aurora Teal colour which is absolutely beautiful too. We opted for the L/XL Size and it fits on pretty much its smallest setting so there is room to grow into it too. Poppy measured about 80cm around the neck so were taking a little chance, hoping it wouldn't be too big. Getting the harness on and off is easy too - I was worried it would be a challenge having to slip it over Poppy's head, but it is no bother at all!

Love it

I don’t know why I put off investing in a quality harness & lead combo for so long?! If you’re on the fence about spending the money but know you need it - trust me you won’t regret buy it. Honestly my dog is a spastic on the collar/lead, she would try to asphyxiate herself every time we went somewhere. This harness is bloody perfect, it minimises the tennis elbow I’ve now got, fits her great, is easy to wash, and I love the colour. I got it with a large Ruffeear Roamer Bungee Dog Leash & she just bounces back to me like a freaking dog boomerang if she acts a fool. Adjust the lead to go around my waist & off we trot on our arvo walks like one cohesive unit. Great, great, great, definitely recommend it.
