The Approach Pack by Ruffwear is a great camping and trekking dog backpack that is ideal for day hikes or overnight adventures. Made from 420D ripstop nylon, it is rugged and durable, yet lightweight, dog rucksack that has a comfortable, streamlined design that, when fit properly, will stay stable on your dog's back.
The Approach Pack is available in 4 sizes and 2 bright 'hi-viz' colours - Meadow Green or Orange Poppy. Scroll down the page for sizing instructions.
Five adjustment points - these allow the pack to be adjusted and snugly fitted to a wide variety of dog shapes. With proper fit, this adjustability ensures the pack will stay stable on your dog (not slide back and forth) and should not interfere with your dog's range of motion.
Trail-ready saddlebag design - the panniers have 2 zipped compartments on each side so your dog can carry their food, water, leads, bowls or other trail essentials. As well the zippers are coated to run smooth, there are external gear loops, and there is side reflective trim for improved visibility in low light conditions.
Handy padded back handle - the handle has been positioned on the back of the pack so you can assist your dog over rocks and obstacles in a controlled manner.
Two leash attachment points - there is a single-piece, anodised aluminium V-ring just at the front of the back handle or a webbing loop sitting further back behind the handle.
Weight-forward saddlebag design - the streamlined design of the panniers creates passive compression that stabilises the pack contents.
An integrated harness - the panniers are attached to an underlying 'Web Master Harness' which provides load stability and weight distribution. The underbelly straps on the harness are padded for comfort and to minimise the risk of chaffing. Click here to see a video on the harness and it's adjustment.
Low-light visibility trim - reflective trim runs across each side of the pack
To determine the best size for your dog, measure around your dog's girth/chest - just behind your dog's front legs - then compare it to the chart below. Be sure to measure around the widest part of your dog's chest (measure around it just like you were measuring around your own chest). Click here for a video on how to measure your dog's chest.
It is important for the pack to fit snug.Just like with saddlebags on a horse the pack should fit snugly so it stays stable and doesn't shift and rub.
Do not size up just to get extra capacity. Always size by the chest measure.
* PLEASE NOTE: it is not recommended that your dog carry more than 20% of their body weight in their dog pack. If your dog is new to dog packs, start with an empty bag and gradually work up to a heavier load as your dog gets accustomed to wearing the pack.

Strong, good quality, easy to adjust. Allows for comfortable movement
Bronte is a 7 month old springer spaniel and we needed a harness that will allow comfortable movement of her shoulders while protecting her neck if she decides to lunge or pull. (we're working on that not happening anymore) We just love our front range harness. The bright pink matches her personality as well. It's a quality product and I feel it will last us a long time, despite using it in rough conditions (mud, water, etc). It's easy to adjust the size and it has a lot of room for her to grow into as well.

So far so good - Pippa (Mastiff x Ridgeback, aged 6 months) doesn't mind putting it on and it looks really comfortable on her, especially as there is no rubbing under her armpits and the elastic straps accomodate all of her giant puppy antics. It dries quickly after a dunk in the river or sea and we are loving the front attachment to control her enthusiastic pulling as we continue with lead training. Well made, good quality and very quick delivery. We bought the M and are hoping that she doesn't grow beyond that as she still has 10cm spare if needed. Very happy! :)
