The Approach Pack by Ruffwear is a great camping and trekking dog backpack that is ideal for day hikes or overnight adventures.  Made from 420D ripstop nylon, it is rugged and durable, yet lightweight, dog rucksack that has a comfortable, streamlined design that, when fit properly, will stay stable on your dog's back.

The Approach Pack is available in 4 sizes and 2 bright 'hi-viz' colours - Meadow Green or Orange Poppy.  Scroll down the page for sizing instructions.

Features

  • Five adjustment points - these allow the pack to be adjusted and snugly fitted to a wide variety of dog shapes. With proper fit, this adjustability ensures the pack will stay stable on your dog (not slide back and forth) and should not interfere with your dog's range of motion.
  • Trail-ready saddlebag design - the panniers have 2 zipped compartments on each side so your dog can carry their food, water, leads, bowls or other trail essentials.  As well the zippers are coated to run smooth, there are external gear loops, and there is side reflective trim for improved visibility in low light conditions.
  • Handy padded back handle - the handle has been positioned on the back of the pack so you can assist your dog over rocks and obstacles in a controlled manner.
  • Two leash attachment points - there is a single-piece, anodised aluminium V-ring just at the front of the back handle or a webbing loop sitting further back behind the handle.
  • Weight-forward saddlebag design - the streamlined design of the panniers creates passive compression that stabilises the pack contents.
  • An integrated harness - the panniers are attached to an underlying 'Web Master Harness' which provides load stability and weight distribution. The underbelly straps on the harness are padded for comfort and to minimise the risk of chaffing.  Click here to see a video on the harness and it's adjustment.
  • Low-light visibility trim - reflective trim runs across each side of the pack

Sizing

To determine the best size for your dog, measure around your dog's girth/chest - just behind your dog's front legs - then compare it to the chart below.  Be sure to measure around the widest part of your dog's chest (measure around it just like you were measuring around your own chest). Click here for a video on how to measure your dog's chest.

It is important for the pack to fit snug.Just like with saddlebags on a horse the pack should fit snugly so it stays stable and doesn't shift and rub.

Do not size up just to get extra capacity.  Always size by the chest measure.

* PLEASE NOTE: it is not recommended that your dog carry more than 20% of their body weight in their dog pack.   If your dog is new to dog packs, start with an empty bag and gradually work up to a heavier load as your dog gets accustomed to wearing the pack.

NEW! 2020 Front Range Harness - Popular Everyday Dog Harness

the harness is really good for our golden retriever and we walk much better with it

Not Very Happy

My two dogs refuse to move going for a walk, when they have the new harness on. They prefer the old ones instead. Can you advise whatI need to do for them to walk with the new ones on. They are English Staffys male and female 3 and 4 years olds. HELP! Ashok Perera

Front range harness

Fantastic harness that fits my bloodhound very well and bshe no longer does the death roll that head collars invoked. So a solution we are both happy with....she gets to strut and I don't have a dislocated shoulder.

I had bought one of your other harnesses for my greyhound. The adjustments in the harness and capacity to fit nice and snug is brilliant, which is why I bought this one. Winning!!

Absolutely awesome customer service

Great help with product information and excellent communication

Happy doggie

As I have a lean dog getting the measurements correct was important I ordered a medium as even though my dog is big, he is very lean. The product arrived very quick (given I had ordered it over Christmas) and fitting was very simple. The best part is my dog is able to run and enjoy himself and I am confident that he can’t squirm out of his harness. We both get what we want = everyone is happy.

This harness also works great with a 9m track and train lead, which means we can do some training also with the confidence that he can’t wriggle free.
